FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT'S A CHIROPRACTOR?
Chiropractors are one of only seven classes of health care professionals in Ontario that are able to use the title Doctor, with its accompanying rights and obligations. Chiropractors work in a variety of settings such as private practice, family health teams, hospitals, universities and many more. As primary care practitioners, chiropractors can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment / management plan, recommend therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies, and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.
WHAT TRAINING DOES A CHIROPRACTOR HAVE?
After completing an undergraduate university program, a Doctor of Chiropractic spends another four years at an accredited chiropractic college, receiving more than 4,200 hours of specialized clinical training. The curriculum at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (Toronto, ON) includes studies in anatomy, pathology, biomechanics, radiology, chiropractic principles, diagnosis and adjustment techniques. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON MY FIRST VISIT?
Your initial assessment will begin with a thorough history-taking. Dr. Myla may ask you about the following: signs and symptoms of your condition, personal and family medical history, major illnesses, surgeries or operations, medications, and lifestyle questions. She will then proceed to the physical examination, where she may perform some of these tests: blood pressure, postural and movement analysis, reflex and neurological testing, orthopaedic tests, and muscle and joint palpation. Dr. Myla will then present a report of findings, where she will explain your diagnosis and plan of management. Afterwards, if you have given informed consent, you will start your first treatment.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Dr. Myla will be able to provide you with a much more accurate timeline following your initial assessment. In many cases, minor injuries or movement challenges will have dramatic improvements within 4-6 sessions. Major injuries and movement issues are estimated to resolve within 10-12 sessions. Chronic conditions may take more sessions to see a significant resolution. These are general estimates and each patient varies; however, patients will often start feeling better after the first few treatments.
